Can you help?

There is a great need for Metis families to foster or adopt Metis children. On Vancouver Island there are more than 100 Metis children who are in non-Metis foster homes.

Children need to be adopted into their own culture, so we're looking for loving, supportive families who are willing to extend their love and care to a foster child.

Traditional Metis families were often large, and extended to include friends or relatives in need of community or care. Today, children need healthy families more than ever.

Various services in the Victoria area support adoptive parents and families. In addition to the family services provided by Metis Community Services, there are adoption-specific resources available, including support groups, parent education, peer support, and respite care.

The 1996 Adoption Act allows for greater openness in adoption. This allows for varying degrees of interaction between the birth family and adoptive family. Confidentiality can be ensured under the new act if a disclosure veto or no-contact declaration is signed. There's more flexibility in how the adoptive arrangement is designed and an increase in the number of community services available for adoptive parents.
